The Divisions of The Lekki Free Trade Zone

The Lekki Free Trade Zone is divided into two peninsulas: Parcel A and Parcel B, which are the Northern and Southern peninsulas, respectively. The zone is further divided into 4 quadrants, privately owned Joint Ventures with the Lagos State Government, namely:

  1. Southwest Quadrant (Phase 1)

Covering an area of 3000 hectares, Phase 1 is envisioned as a multifunctional zone catering to various activities and sectors. Established in 2006 through a joint venture between Chinese and Nigerian governments, Phase 1 aims to promote trade, attract foreign direct investment (FDI), and drive regional industrialization. This phase includes:

  • Comprehensive public facilities.
  • Various industries, including light and medium-sized enterprises, will be established in this zone, promoting economic diversity and growth.
  • Logistics and distribution centers, facilitating efficient cargo handling
  • Residential areas of varying densities to accommodate diverse housing needs.
  • Recreational spaces ensure a balanced and enjoyable lifestyle for residents.

Clusters of the Lekki Free Zone Phase 1

Phase 1 is further divided into six functional clusters, the quadrant is planned to ensure a good the clusters and proper services for all of them. They are:

  • Holiday Resort Cluster of Lekki Lagoon

Situated along the northern border of the LFTZ, this cluster comprises two island plots designated for holiday resorts, tourism, and recreational purposes. It offers scenic views of the Lekki Lagoon, attracting visitors seeking leisure and entertainment experiences within the zone.

  • Northern Residential Cluster

Bordering the northern region adjacent to the lagoon, this cluster is dedicated to low to medium-density residential developments. It provides housing options for residents and workers within the LFTZ, ensuring proximity to workplaces and amenities.

  • Southern Industrial Cluster

Located in the southern region of the zone, the Southern Industrial Cluster accommodates manufacturing industries and industrial facilities.   • Southwest Warehouse and Logistics Cluster

This cluster focuses on warehousing, storage, and logistics operations in the southwest quadrant. It features standardized facilities for efficient storage and distribution of goods, enhancing supply chain management within the zone and facilitating international trade.

  • Central Business District

Serving as the commercial and business hub of the LFTZ, the Central Business District hosts corporate offices, commercial establishments, and service facilities. It provides a conducive environment for business activities, networking, and collaboration, driving economic growth and innovation within the zone. This cluster covers up to 150 hectares of Phase 1.

2. Phase 2 (Southeast Quadrant):

This section of the Lekki Free Trade Zone is designated for petrochemical-related industries. It is home to the newly commissioned Dangote Refinery, which has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s refining capacity and petrochemical production.

3. Phase 3 (Northwest Quadrant):

The Northwest Quadrant, known as Alaro City, is intended for mixed-use industrial activities. It is a hub for diverse industries and commercial enterprises, fostering economic growth and employment opportunities.

4. Phase 4 (Northeast Quadrant):

Major Developments and Projects in the Lekki Free Trade Zone

  1. Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Plant:

The most significant development within the Lekki Free Trade Zone was the construction of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Plant. Spearheaded by Africa’s wealthiest individual, Aliko Dangote, this colossal project projected to emerge as the largest single-train refinery globally has finally been completed. With a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery is set to cater not only to Nigeria’s domestic petroleum product demand but also to position the nation as a key exporter.

2. Lekki Deep Sea Port:

4. Dangote Fertilizer Plant:

Occupying 500 hectares of land, the $2.5 billion Dangote Fertilizer Plant is a key asset within the Lekki Free Trade Zone. With an annual production capacity of 3 million metric tons of urea fertilizer, this plant is set to fill Nigeria’s fertilizer gap and increase agricultural productivity nationwide.

5. Ibeju Lekki-Epe Expressway:

The completion of the first phase of the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway upgrade marks a significant checkpoint. According to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, construction of the second phase has already begun, and the Lekki-Epe axis will experience a socio-economic boon solely through this project.

6. Lagos Smart City:

Within the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the ambitious Lagos Smart City project is underway.
